McCain and Palin together again

“It” came from Wasilla and strutted into Arizona today to boost Sen. John McCain’s sagging re-election bid. Seriously, he didn’t learn his lesson in November? He still thinks Sarah Palin can be an asset? If he had an ounce of sense left, he’d have begged her to stay far, far away. Like deep in the … Continue reading »

McCaaaaain, you did this!

I was shocked and deeply disappointed when John McCain named Sarah Palin as his GOP running mate back in 2008. Since then, I’ve just been getting angrier and angrier. He created and loosed upon us the creature that has haunted us ever since. He lifted her from obscurity, pumped her full of political one-liners, dreams … Continue reading »

I don’t regret voting for President Obama

Over on Real Clear Politics today, there’s an op-ed piece entitled “Why I Regret Voting for President Obama.” It’s written by freelance writer and independent voter Jill Dorson. I wonder what connections you need to call yourself a freelance writer and get published on RCP? I can write. I’m definitely freelance. And I definitely have … Continue reading »

Johnny Mac and the Internet

Hoo, boy. I had to hear this first from Jon Stewart, not from one of our “legitimate” news sources. Sen. John McCain introduced a bill in the Senate last Thursday, the “Internet Freedom Act of 2009.” Way to go, John! I’ve always been for net neutrality and a free Internet. I’ve signed petitions supporting it, … Continue reading »

I read the news today, but why?

That Alaskan woman whose initials are S.P. is going to “collaborate” in the writing of a book. A book! B-O-O-K. She can’t even remember which newspapers she reads. Her part in the collaboration will probably consist of autographing said book for the six people who still care she exists. Obama’s not going to release the … Continue reading »

Sadly, Election Day probably won’t be the end

I’m relieved that Election Day is less than 24 hours away, finally. This campaign season has been interminable and I’ve been ready for weeks for it to be over. It’s looking very good for Obama and I’m very excited about that. But I’m also extremely anxious that something could happen, something could go wrong; votes … Continue reading »

Breaking my Palin promise

I’ve just about stopped reading news of the presidential campaign since, unless I’m struck deaf and blind, I’m going to be inundated with it anyway. Still, I like to peruse the headlines over at Real Clear Politics just to get a sense of what’s being said about the campaign, and this morning I came across … Continue reading »

Powell endorses Obama and what America can be

On NBC’s “Meet the Press” Sunday, Colin Powell endorsed Barack Obama for president. The endorsement alone was enough to be worth preserving and replaying by Obama fans. More important, however, was Powell’s explanation of why he is supporting Obama:

WordPress and PollDaddy make sweet music

This is a test of WordPress’s incorporation of PollDaddy polls today: Oh, that’s so cool. It was a lot of work designing and integrating those same polls a couple of months ago. Now it’s so simple a caveman can do it.

It’s bleak Friday for McCain campaign

Yesterday was certainly an interesting day on the campaign trail, more interesting to Obama supporters than to the McCain camp. The McCain folks probably wish the whole day had never happened. John McCain had to put a lid on on some angry, misinformed supporters at a rally in Minnesota, and got booed for doing so. … Continue reading »

At 53-minute mark, debate is a yawner

I’ve already lost my imaginary drinking game for this evening’s presidential debate in Nashville, Tenn. John McCain has said “my friends” five times in the first 45 minutes of the debate and a shot each time would have me passed out on the floor by now. I’m writing another post and only halfway listening to … Continue reading »

Earmarks even in emergency bailout — disgusting

The U.S. Senate passed an economic bailout package Wednesday night — rescue bill, if you want to use the current vernacular — and the bill is now being debated in the House. There’s plenty of disagreement about whether the $700 billion deal is sufficient and is actually what’s needed to steady the American economy. It’s … Continue reading »

Erratic or just old, McCain not a wise choice for president

Is John McCain ready to be president of the United States? Actually, I’m beginning to think he’s well past ready. He missed his window of opportunity in 2000 and is now careening into the sunset, becoming increasingly erratic and unpredictable. His inexplicable behavior and contradictory remarks over the last 10 days or so, coming on … Continue reading »

First ’08 presidential debate: a tie

To keep it real simple: I think tonight’s presidential debate was basically a tie.

McCain’s debate dodge is desperate political theatrics

John McCain’s unexpected suspension of his presidential campaign yesterday strikes me as a purely political maneuver, adopted to once again create a distraction or upheaval in a campaign that’s not going his way and, possibly, to get out of a debate that he had concluded would not serve him well. It feels like “cut and … Continue reading »

The slow-motion crash of the Straight-Talk Express

A Politico article today explained why I drifted away from any notion of voting for John McCain. In “How John McCain lost me,” Elizabeth Drew details John McCain’s eight-year drift away from a time when both she and I could have voted for McCain for president. Without researching the history myself, I could not have … Continue reading »

Language, the media, and the endless campaign

Don’t turn on your television today if you don’t want to hear someone say “lipstick on a pig.” Believe it or not, we’re trying to elect the next U.S. president, and everyone has their knickers in a twist over an old, old English figure of speech. Obama used it to describe some of McCain’s proposals; … Continue reading »

Catty remarks about the RNC: Better late than never

I’ve been a bit distracted, not to mention burned out on politics, since the end of the Republicans’ little soiree in St. Paul Thursday night. Still am, actually, but wanted to get in a few parting shots before I forget: What the hell happened to Cindy McCain’s hair? That mess looked more like her Thursday … Continue reading »

Okay, McCain is a war hero; and your point is … ?

John McCain’s acceptance speech was nearing a surprisingly effective (for him) conclusion when he said, “I wasn’t my own man anymore. I was my country’s.” Good line. It, like a few others, came as he described his imprisonment in North Vietnam. Frankly, I didn’t think there was any way he could tell that story in … Continue reading »

What!? No flag pin? Tsk, tsk, Senator McCain

Senator McCain is halfway though his acceptance speech at the RNC, and guess what? He’s not wearing a flag pin. With all the Country First rhetoric, all the drum-beating and war hero stuff, he’s standing there with no flag pin in his lapel. After castigating Barack Obama for months for the same transgression, McCain appears … Continue reading »
