Dissing the bard

Well, I’m a little late to the barbecue, but I just learned that on New Year’s Eve, Cee Lo Green sang John Lennon’s “Imagine.” Only thing is, he changed the words. He changed “Nothing to kill or die for / And no religion too” to “Nothing to kill or die for / And all religion … Continue reading »

Atheist by default

Over on Sean Hannity’s blog there’s a thread entitled “Anybody else here a reluctant atheist?” Someone calling himself Poptart posted the following, which happens to explain my own thinking rather well: I didn’t choose to be an atheist, because I am without belief by default. I don’t “choose” my beliefs. My beliefs evolve from a … Continue reading »

One of these things is not like the others …

I just came across this statement in a Wikipedia entry describing the Occupy Wall Street demonstrators: “Religious beliefs vary as well including, but not limited to, Christians, Jews, Muslims and atheists.” Why are atheists included in the list? Atheism is not a religious belief; it is the absence of religious belief. Perhaps the author was … Continue reading »

Atheist poster in NY subway! OMG!

MSNBC’s Contessa Whatshername just reported a new poster is appearing in NY subways that — gasp! — promotes atheism! The horror! You could hear the disgust in her voice. Poor thing. She could barely contain herself. What is our world coming to when atheists are allowed to post their evil propaganda right up there with … Continue reading »

Group sues to stop Inauguration prayers

I just saw on Fox News that the FFRF (Freedom from Religion Foundation) has filed a lawsuit to stop the prayers at Barack Obama’s January 20 Inaugural. And with a silent cheer, I dug up and read the details and the first few comments that followed. I was all set to launch into another rant … Continue reading »

‘Being an atheist is like being gay’

“Being an atheist is like being gay. You don’t choose it, it tends to make you unpopular, nobody knows unless you tell them—and it’s not something to be ashamed of!” Isn’t that a great analogy? Andy Butler, a graduate student at the University of Minnesota, wrote that. He goes on to discuss briefly the Richard Dawkins … Continue reading »

Not an atheist among ‘em

Decided to answer my own question about the religions of the ’08 presidential candidates and found the following compilation from the Associated Press on the Nashua (NH) Telegraph‘s website: DEMOCRATS Delaware Sen. Joseph Biden: Roman Catholic New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton: Methodist Connecticut Sen. Christopher Dodd: Catholic Former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards: Methodist Ohio … Continue reading »

Christians vs atheists: Open minds welcome

John Shore, over on “Suddenly Christian,” has done it again. He started another discussion today between Christians and atheists that has exploded with comments from both sides. If you are at all interested in topics like this, you should check it out. The first was “An Honest Question: Atheists, How Do You Process Your Guilt?” The follow-up … Continue reading »

Assured scorn in America

I’ve always had the feeling that scorn is one thing assured to secularists, humanists, agnostics, atheists, etc., in our society. It’s a predominantly Christian society that seems to have a decidedly un-Christian attitude toward non-Christians and especially toward non-believers. I’ve even seen statements that atheists are “the most despised minority in America.” I grew up in a rather strict … Continue reading »
