Hmm, always wondered exactly where and how Anonymous got started. If 4chan started lolcats too, there must be some insane creativity pooled in that place. And Anonymous certainly seems to know their way around computers. I admire their expertise, as long as they show restraint.

"Anonymous", the Guy Fawkes kids, are the army of anarchy started by 4chan. Weirdly enough, 4chan is also responsible for "lolcats" (re: http://icanhascheezburger.com ). Actually, a lot of the Internets meme's get their start on 4chan. I would suggest never, ever going near 4chan.

That's where it is now, since so often I'm focusing on the political aspects, or regulation. And I think of blogging, WordPress, etc., as mass comm, too. Guess I'll leave it as it.

Nope, I don't admit to hanging around Reddit. Never been there, actually. I've just heard the name over the years and know they were one of the original backers of the blackout. (I've never heard of 4chan.) My concern is that the blackout was the only really big, organized (more or less) response to what seems to be an endless stream of threats. I see the IDL idea not as organizing an army but more as setting up a mailing list for quickly spreading the word and suggesting a response. The response, if any, is left entirely up to each website owner. Unfortunately, finding a way to quickly organize another blackout or similar protest is probably going to be like trying to herd cats. Who knows, that in itself may be the Internet's best defense; maybe the government can't herd cats any better than we can.

One of my "beats" for a long time was "the Internet", but when I told friends in the Tech sector I always had to add "privacy issues" because I knew (and continue to know) nada about the nuts and bolts of the tech involved. I could tell you the list of companies responsible for building the Web, or the name of the guy who invented the Web (the Web, for example, is not the Internet), and I know Linux is an operating system, but RAM / ROM still messes me up.

Carnivore, for example, was an FBI pre-911 domestic spy program. I could tell you how it worked, but how was it programmed? Not a clue. Basically, I know the architecture, but not the engineering. Which, if he ever read that, would make my grandfather very sad.

If I were making the list, I think I'd include "Internet Issues" or "Internet Politics" under the Media/Comm tab.

Hmm, I don't know why it didn't occur to me to put it under both, or either, depending on the focus. I guess I was just thinking in terms of someone clicking on the "Internet" category to up every post discussing it. I'm inclined to think most readers come here looking for a specific post anyway and don't run topic searches while they are here. But I could be wrong.
