Birdwatching in the good ol’ USA

  1. Wow, couldn’t have said it better myself. Perfect analogy. I for one would like to see all the bird feeders taken down. Will it ever be so? Hard to say.

  2. Nobody invited them in, right? But lots of people who cannot outsource their businesses to workers abroad wanted those workers to come in. Look into the New York hotel industry.

However, this morning I read two blogs about US retail shops that no longer sell rice and flour freely. That shortage (one of them said) was caused by farm harvests being turned into ethanol to substitue gasoline, a very lucrative idea, and it might also put an end to overweight problems in many places. One of those blogs was http://my-dreamtime.blogspot.com/

I’ve heard that “corn for ethanol causing the shortage” thing. I don’t know how much truth there is to it, but it figures the farmers would sell their corn to whomever will pay the highest price. I did see one report suggesting that the shortages were due to people stocking up and hoarding because they heard there were shortages! The self-fulfilling prophecy. It’s happened before and the market eventually sorts itself out. High gas prices are putting a crimp in our distribution system right now, and forcing up prices for all kinds of things.

  3. I totally missed this one. Not sure who wrote it, maybe it was Maxine (ha! ha! ha!) but I’m glad it struck you the same way it did me. Come my way and vent anytime PT!
