Update, June 24: The gov just finished a press conference, and sure enough, it was a woman, an Argentinian he met eight years ago. Surprise! Not.

Update, June 24: The wandering governor has returned! And it turns out he was in Buenos Aires, Argentina! Hope she was worth it, Gov.

Missing Republican Governor Mark Sanford of South Carolina has finally checked in with his office and said he’ll be back at work tomorrow. Well now, isn’t that just peachy keen.
A sitting governor hops into his SUV one day, says au revoir, and disappears for five days. No explanations, no itinerary left behind. No one knows where he is. No one at his office. Not his wife, nor his four kids. Even though it’s Father’s Day weekend. And he doesn’t call to check in with anyone, either.
Us common folk could pull a stunt like that, maybe. Those of us with no friends, no families, no jobs, no responsibilities. But Sanford is an elected official, a governor, a sort of mini head of state. I don’t care how stressed he thinks he is or how much time he thinks he needs to recharge his batteries or how much vacation time he might have accrued. He chose to run for and accept the responsibilities of the highest office in his state. People in positions like that don’t have the luxury of just blowing things off and disappearing for six days.
Word now is that he was hiking the Appalachian Trail. And, coincidentally or not, Sunday was National Hike Naked Day. Whatever. Frankly, the whole thing stinks to high heaven. There’s a lot more to this story, mark my words.
And while I’m predicting, I predict he’s really screwed up any chance he might have had at getting his party’s presidential nomination.
