The circumstances couldn’t be more tragic. Another American military family has lost a son. But in Harrisonville, Mo., 2,000 to 3,000 friends and neighbors turned out to make certain the infamous Phelps family from the Westboro Baptist Church could not disrupt the funeral of Army Cpl. Jacob R. Carver.
The Phelps family is known for demonstrating at the funerals of fallen soldiers, shouting and waving signs saying the soldier’s death is God’s punishment for America’s tolerance of homosexuality. But just as happened in Weston, Mo., recently, when the Phelps family arrived, the streets were already lined with flag-waving Americans who crowded them out and kept them well away from the church, family, and funeral procession.
Nice going, Harrisonville. You’re what America is all about.
This sort of evil intrusion on a family that’s probably nearly insane in anguish over what might seem like a futile waste of their child’s life is unbelievable. Also unbelievable is that members of the Phelps family still have still have breath in their lungs. Were I in those grieving parents shoes, I couldn’t guarantee the Phelps would survive.
I feel the same way. And so did most of the people who commented on the original story.
I’m still waiting for the day that they choose to protest the funeral of a soldier from a very large, very Italian, family from Jersey. That would be their last protest 😉
