America’s favorite sports commentator, preacher Pat Robertson, has weighed in on Denver’s recent trade of Tim Tebow to the New York Jets.
You heard about that little trade, didn’t you? The Denver Broncos had the temerity to trade away wunderkind quarterback Tim Tebow. The Tebow of “tebowing.” The Tebow who all but walked on water last season after the team made him their starting QB. The kid who pulled off an amazing string of six come-from-behind victories to take a ho-hum team to the first round of the playoffs. The kid who made even yours truly start watching Denver football. Yeah, that Tim Tebow. Traded. The insanity!
And yet, there was a consolation prize. A recently recruited guy named Peyton Manning was waiting to fill little Timmy’s slot. You’ve heard of Manning, right? He hails from the Family Manning, a strange little group gifted with more football talent than any ten families have a right to. Future Hall of Famer who sat out last season with a neck injury. Living legend. Yeah, that Peyton Manning.
Even I, jaded as I am, think Peyton Manning being right here in River City — er, Denver — is a big deal. A very big deal. Huge. I might even have to follow the Broncos next fall, religiously. Even Tebow couldn’t get me to do that.
But despite all the catty things I’ve said about Tebow in the past, I can’t help thinking what a really lousy deal all this was for him. The lousiest. When was the last time you recall a quarterback doing what Tebow did for the Broncos and then getting canned a couple of months later. I mean, what’s a guy gotta do to keep a job in this league?
So I agree with Robertson on one point. Tim Tebow was indeed treated “shabbily.” It wasn’t deliberate, it wasn’t planned, it was just business. But still, getting dumped so suddenly from such a lofty perch is probably the biggest shock of that young man’s life. About the only thing good about it is that he doesn’t also have a wife and family to uproot. No wonder pro players get paid so much. There really isn’t enough money in the world to compensate a guy for essentially being kicked out of town overnight on someone else’s whim. Helluva way to live.
As for Pat Robertson, he’s still working on that ‘Meanest Man Alive‘ title. He says it would serve the Broncos right if Manning’s injury keeps him from playing. He’s right, of course; payback’s a bitch. And those who wish it on someone else should keep that in mind.
