Happy Birthday, Jon Stewart!

Today is Jon Stewart’s 50th birthday. He’s been my favorite comic and political satirist for maybe half a dozen years. He’s come a long way since 1994, when he did stand-up at Boston College. I wonder if he ever dreamed back then that some day he’d be hobnobbing with the president of the United States.

In 1997 he did an interview with George Carlin, my all-time favorite comic:

And here he is in his very first appearance on The Daily Show in January 1999:

The Huffington Post today is featuring a wonderful collection of photos and videos — “50 reasons to love Jon Stewart.” If you’re a fan, don’t miss it.

    • Carlin’s play with language is what first attracted me to him. (I was hooked from the moment I heard his Wonderful WINO bit on Johnny Carson back in the ’60s.) I don’t know when I first stumbled into Stewart. Both came by accident because I don’t really seek out comedy for entertainment. Nope, haven’t read the book.

  1. You and I are in full agreement here, and especially on Carlin. I have long been in awe of his facility with the language, his intelligence, his candor, his insights into the human condition. Enjoyed both clips – thanks.

    • Throughout the interminable campaign of 2012, I kept wishing Carlin were still with us. We needed his candid assessment of the situation — and you know he’d have had a field day.
