The New York Supreme Court today declared NYC Mayor Bloomberg’s sugary drink law “arbitrary and capricious.” The law, which would have forbidden the sale of sugary drinks larger than 16 oz., was to take effect tomorrow. It’s high time somebody put their foot down on ridiculous “food police” laws. Did it really take a state supreme court to see how absurd this law was?
I don’t know how they thought they were gonna enforce such a law anyway, considering how easily people get around other “No, that’s not good for you!” attempts…
I think inevitably the enforcement would have been “arbitrary and capricious” too.
Although I agree that our culture promotes “more is better,” there should not be any laws that restrict the sale of food and beverages (non-alcoholic of course). This could open a whole can of worms. Plus… self-responsibility. I also see that as a move towards a dictatorship.
Agreed. Our everyday consumption is none of the government’s business.
