(Update: March 28: First egg hatched this morning.)
A friendly reminder to the winter-weary (and I know there are a lot of you out there): The hummingbird nest cam, a live streaming webcam, is running, as is the family-friendly chat channel that accompanies it. Enjoy a live, close-up view of Phoebe the hummingbird and her nest, currently with two eggs nestled in it. Turn up the volume for the tranquil sounds of a spring garden, the occasional whirr of a hummer’s wings, birds singing in the background, etc. You’ll feel like you’ve opened your windows for the first time. Also, don’t forget full-screen mode so you can see every feather. Notes on the site indicate the hatch watch begins today.
For those new to the site, an adult hummingbird is 3 to 3.5 inches long, beak tip to tail tip. The nest is about the size of a golf ball and the eggs are the size of TicTacs. For those who watch Phoebe every year, be warned that you’ll be met with an introductory ad this year.
(More on Phoebe from past years)
If you prefer bald eagles, check out the Decorah (Iowa) Eagles. Notes indicate there are three eggs in the nest. Not as springy there. Looks cold, sounds like rain.
Ah, yes! This is the new Phoebe, technically Phoebe Renata Allens. (Renata means “reborn.”) It is believed that the previous Phoebe lost a territorial dispute for the garden. Her last chicks were abandoned, were tended to by hand, and then released on March 2. Some feel the current Phoebe may be one of the previous Phoebe’s daughters. It’s quite a soap opera. This was chronicled on the FB page, BTW.
The last time I tuned in was, I think, after the last Phoebe disappeared. There was no nest in sight, just a lonely rose bush. Sad. Yes, there have been so many dramas on this channel. The crow. The lizard. Mysterious disappearances. One never knows what’s next.
Sheer heaven. And what’s more, I’m able to view it ! Someone will probably remove it from such a far place, at some stage … But for now ! 😀
It’s very windy for the poor little creature: she’s being blown about like anything …
Oh I hope you don’t get cut off. But be warned — it can be very addicting. I’ve spent hours watching these little birds, not to mention the eagles, the barn owls, the falcons …
Good grief ! – you are a most pernicious influence …
LOL!
Thanks for the link (but agree with M-R about the pernicious influence!) 🙂
I’ll settle for any kind of influence I can get. 😉
Better than TV! They are such jewels.
thanks for this refreshing respite from winter’s clutches )
I was thinking of you in particular when I posted it.
very kind of you )
Been watching Phoebe off and on for several years now myself. Many happy moments and several traumatic ones also as you noted. I have watched the Decorah Eagles webcam a few times but I’m a White Rock Eagle fan myself. That site is located in British Columbia only a mile or so from the US/Washington State border. They have three eggs this year also.
I’ll have to look for those. But Phoebe has always been my favorite. Something about having such a close view of something so tiny. I did got just as hooked on Molly the Barn Owl a few years ago that was pretty amazing too. I think the owner was overwhelmed by the response. Hasn’t done a live feed since then.
Oh, I missed the first hatch this morning!!
Oh if I had a dollar for every first hatch and fledge that I had missed… 😕
Heh, I know the feeling. I’ve missed almost all of them. But I was lucky enough to catch one or two and they were exciting.
Yea, I was a Molly watcher also and you are right, I think Molly’s fan base was bit too much for them. 🙂
I don’t blame them for not wanting to go through that again. But I’m so glad they did it the one time.
I signed up! I saw eggs!!! Thanks so much for letting us know about this!
If you think eggs are exciting, wait till they hatch!
Oops, one did this morning! That’ll teach me to sleep in.
eeeeeeeeeeeeyow! Can’t wait!
