Trail Ridge Road is open for 2014 and webcam is live

Until a reader reminded me, I’d completely forgotten that Memorial Day weekend is the traditional opening of Rocky Mountain National Park’s Trail Ridge Road. Our heavy snows this winter did not delay the opening as I’d feared. The announcement appears on the National Park Service website and includes the caution that spring melting and freezing nighttime temperatures may still close the road at times.

The Alpine Visitor Center, gift shop, and coffee shop near the road’s high point will be open for business soon. Its webcam has been cleared and is now operational. The screenshot above is from this evening. Click it to see the current view.
