He only wanted a funny picture. A picture of himself emerging from a giant vagina sculpture. Adolescent humor.
Well, it was humorous all right. But he wasn’t the one laughing. Seems the 20-year-old American exchange student managed to get stuck in the sculpture last Friday and the fire department — 22 responders in all — had to be called to free him.
The 2001 sculpture, titled Chacán-Pi (Making Love) was created by Peruvian artist Fernando de la Jara. It stands outside Tübingen (Germany) University’s Institute for Microbiology and Virology. The 32-ton artwork is red Veronese marble and according to the artist, signifies “the gateway to the world.” It is valued at almost $200,000.
According to some reports, the student was responding to a dare by his (now former?) friend, Erick Guzman, who took a picture and then called for help.
The unidentified student was “delivered” after some 30 minutes of labor. Only his dignity was injured.

Hard not to laugh, even if you feel sorry for the student. He’ll have a hard time living this down.

I know. That photograph is all over the Internet and will be there forever. I haven’t seen his name mentioned anywhere yet, but it will get around. His friends know who he is.

Now he has an even funnier story…maybe he’ll be able to laugh and tell it someday. (meanwhile he’ll be thinking everyone is chuckling and staring at him….probably true)

Usually I trip over it while browsing any one of a number of news websites. Start clicking on interesting articles, links, etc., and there’s no telling where you’ll end up or what you’ll find.
Art, like beauty, is said to repose in the eye (brain?) of the beholder. To me, this sculpture is not only not art but an embarrassing waste of time and energy. If someone were actually willing to pay $200,000 for it, that would only prove to me that some people have more money than sense. IMHO.
Yep, it strikes me as a terrible waste of marble. I’d say it’s about $199,999 worth of marble and $1 worth of talent (and that’s probably an over-valuation of the talent). If properly sliced up, it would probably yield some nice countertops …
