Those supporting the proposed Death with Dignity law in Colorado will be disappointed to learn the bill failed yesterday to get out of the Committee on Public Health Care & Human Services. The Denver Post reported the bill was defeated on an 8-5 bipartisan vote. The official state website shows a motion to postpone the bill “indefinitely” passed 9-4 (click “Votes” the at the top of the page and then “HB15-1135”). An unofficial statewide poll had indicated voters supported the bill 68% to 28% with 4% undecided, didn’t know, or not sure.
Didn’t anticipate that this time out there. Did you see where Canada is also starting the legislative process? Didn’t read it closely, but they feel it will be years before finalized and ready for patients to use.
Saw something about Canada. Just a headline. Forget what it said. It could certainly put some positive pressure on things here if they approved it.
I was really sad to see our bill go down so fast. I was hoping at least it would be a long, thoughtful discussion that would be around for awhile, raising public awareness if nothing else.
