And I’d swear things are getting worse, not better …
Smithsonian magazine carried an excellent article reviewing the assassination. Before his death he was widely reviled, not only in the South but by many in the Union. Southerners were not the only slave holders. After he was shot the author concluded that the primary public sentiment was not sorrow but “burning curiosity”. Lincoln’s body was embalmed to the point of near solidity and was carted across the country to be viewed by massive crowds.
Did you see Spielberg’s “Lincoln”? I found it very long, at times ponderous. But it gave one a deep appreciation for the man and what he faced. And, as it turned out, it portrayed Lincoln almost exactly as I’d always imagined he was. What a service he did this country, even if it wasn’t appreciated at the time.
