A plea for Pluto

  1. I don’t think the planetary status of Pluto in any way diminishes the achievement. Somewhere on the internet there’s probably an image representing the flight path taken to rendezvous with Pluto and I know (without having seen it) that people like me can’t be anything but amazed that someone calculated it in advance of launching the probe. I’m just a bit disappointed that I am too old to be around long enough to see very many of our future space exploits. It’s just amazing.

    1. It is a jaw-droppingly awesome achievement. I’ve read and seen a lot about the calculations necessary to achieve the actual rendezvous. Perhaps the most amazing detail was how much faster this craft is than any before, how much faster it could and did get away from earth in order to ultimately get to Pluto. Mind boggling. And I share your disappointment about missing the future exploits. New Horizons alone is going on to explore the Kuiper Belt, discovering who knows what out there.

  2. Don’t see it happening but it certainly has captured the public’s adoration over the years. Besides, our good friend Neil Tyson is one of the naysayers and says it honestly doesn’t meet the standard. In fact, in the video I have attached where he recently discussed the issue with Stephen Colbert he emphatically stated that Pluto is not a planet because it is not on his tie….

    1. “Because it’s not on his tie”! ROFL. Love Tyson, and of course he would wear a scientifically accurate tie. Sure, Pluto doesn’t meet the standard now because they demoted it by changing the standard. I think they should change the standard back to include it again. But what do I know?

      1. And thanks for the video. Greatly enjoyed it and would have missed it completely without your posting it. I didn’t realize Colbert was doing anything right now. (By the way, it looked to me like there was room to paint Pluto back onto Tyson’s tie …) Meantime, I suppose “King of the Kuiper Belt” has a nice ring to it.

        1. Actually thought you had probably seen it but glad you enjoyed it. And you’re definitely right about the room on the tie. “King of the Kuiper Belt” however does seem to have a pretty formidable ring to it if you ask me. 🙂

... and that's my two cents
