In March of last year, I posted this old “Where the Hell is Matt?” video from 2012. A few days ago I came across it again, and I heard it in a whole new way. The chorus became an earworm that’s been with me ever since. I find myself humming it and silently singing the words:
We’re gonna trip the light, we’re gonna break the night
The lyricists couldn’t have imagined the current political situation in America when they wrote the song, but we will trip the light again; we will break the dismal night that has settled over America. We will. We will.
Music: Garry Schyman
Lyrics: Alicia Lemke and Matt Harding
Vocals: Alicia Lemke
Picture: Alicia Lemke
Video: Steve Afer
A short phrase, “the dismal night that has settled over America”—but it says so much. Thank you, Susan.
That’s what it feels like to me. A long dismal night. No stars, just dark clouds.
Here’s a contrasty thought: Matt Harding for President!
He’d get my vote!
Why not Alicia Lemke instead of the bloke?
Sad to say she died of leukemia at age 28, just a couple of years after recording this.
I didn’t know that, but then again I’d never heard of her before
Nor had I. I think I first read that in the comments with the video.
Well I don’t feel bad now
