Two scarlet letters for Donald Trump are meaningless. So what if the history books can note that he’s the only president in history to be impeached twice? Impeachment is little more than Congressional name-calling and Trump has been called names before. Often. Throughout his life. Impeachment is just an ugly brand, and it’s not even on his forehead where everyone will see it.
Impeachment must be followed by conviction if it’s to have any real meaning, any real teeth. Conviction declares that he is guilty. Guilty of the impeachment charges. And normally that conviction would remove him from office. Of course it’s too late now to do that, but it’s not too late for the Senate to convict him and, in a second vote, declare he can never again hold federal office.
Unfortunately, as appropriate that might be as an expression of condemnation, outrage, and the primacy of the US Constitution, it will likely make him a martyr to his followers. Or more of a martyr than he already is. But more importantly, it will ensure he cannot run again for president, something he has said he wants to do in 2024. The democratic nation we love simply cannot allow, much less endure, another four years of Donald Trump.
I can feel the pain in your words. Take heart, he is ‘hoisted on his own petard’ as coined by William Shakespare in Hamlet.

True, he is leaving office this week. And that should make a huge difference as we work to repair the damage and move forward. But to ensure our efforts will not be wasted, we must make sure he cannot return.

johnthecook I fear the America we love so much will be torn to shreds by Joe Biden AND his Vice President Kamala Harris as they try to implement Socialists Ideas that are contrary to the good of America and policies that are just plain wrong.
They’ll be too busy trying to clean up Trump’s mess to worry about implementing much socialism. Of course, you must define socialism … Personally, with socialism at the left end of the scale and fascism at the right end, I’d put them in the middle as moderates.
(And remember, it wasn’t Biden supporters or liberals who tore up the Capitol on January 6.)

It would do people well to listen to some “CONSERVITIVE’ News outlets as they give their take on the assault on the US Capital. To be fair it was NOT the conservatives who tore up the US Capital, so who exactly was it?
Proud Boys, QAnon, Boogaloo, Oath Keepers, Three Percenters, and assorted White supremacists were part of the Capitol riot. I don’t know where you get your information, but mine says those are conservative far-right groups.
trump will never run for office again. He’s too tainted. And he’ll be well over his head in legal problems come 2024. Plus, I doubt his health will be that good. All the stress and problems he has coming will bring him some serious health problems. Besides, dementia is showing now. Imagine how much it will be showing in 4 years.

I think it is going to this time, though. I was wrong that he wouldn’t make it to election day (I thought he’d have a heart attack or stroke by then). But I’m confident he won’t be able to run in 2024 for a plethora of reasons.
