I don’t recall which tv show it was … either “The National Parks: America’s Best Idea” or a program about the production of that series. But I spent an hour or two enthralled by spectacular photography and natural wonders before the program closed with this quotation from John Muir:
This grand show is eternal. It is always sunrise somewhere; the dew is never all dried at once; a shower is forever falling; vapor ever rising. Eternal sunrise, eternal sunset, eternal dawn and gloaming, on seas and continents and islands, each in its turn, as the round earth rolls.
It is always sunrise somewhere, and it will come again here as well. Hope does indeed spring eternal. Not only hope, but a renewed determination that these wonders, this beauty, this Earth absolutely must be preserved for ourselves, our descendents, and our very survival.

johnthecook…and some people would say this B-E-A-U-T-I-F-U-L Sun Rise just happened by accident. It was all by chance and out of chaos comes order. These things happen far too often to just be happenstance.
I don’t know anyone who would say sunrises happen by accident. Most people have at least a vague notion about Earth revolving on its axis every 24 hours or so.
But all that aside, it’s still reassuring to know that, no matter how crazy things get, the sun will rise tomorrow.
Coincidentally, in the past week I, too, became enthralled with some PBS national parks videos. Sunrise can offer hope for the start of a new day.
I commend you on your excellent taste in television viewing. I love the national parks series. And I love that every day, no matter how bad things may get, we can still count on that sunrise, a light in the darkness, the promise of another day. Now if we could just get rainfall on a regular schedule …
