USS Junk sailing from California to Hawaii; so far so good

I saw a story on CNN today about some guys sailing from California to Hawaii on a raft made from old plastic jugs and part of a Cessna. They set sail on June 1. I’m probably the last one in the world to hear about this environmentally oriented venture, but that doesn’t matter. They’re doing it to bring attention to the problem of plastics in our oceans, and it’s cool. I’m going back to their blog now to read some more and []

So you want to run for president

Ever wish fervently that you were someplace else? Ever wish you could just have Scotty beam you up and get the hell outta there? John McCain had one of those moments today when a reporter asked him about the fairness of insurance companies paying for Viagra but not birth control. Like a bug writhing on a pin, he struggled to come up with an answer. Talk about getting nailed!

Parade has passed by a bitter, pathetic Jesse Jackson

Rev. Jesse Jackson proved once and for all Sunday that he is a mean-spirited, foul-mouthed human being. And in case you didn’t get it Sunday, he made it crystal clear by waiting until today to apologize to Barack Obama. Like so many before him, Rev. Jackson was tripped up by an open mic. I’ve always thought those pesky little open mics reveal the real individual, the person behind the made-up on-camera mask and carefully rehearsed sound bites. If Jackson has been an []

McCain knows why we are in the Middle East — oil

At a town hall meeting in Denver today, Republican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain of Arizona revealed what he thinks about oil and U.S. involvement in the Middle East: My friends, I will have an energy policy that we will be talking about, which will eliminate our dependence on oil from the Middle East that will — that will then prevent us — that will prevent us from having ever to send our young men and women into conflict again in the []

Wright was quoting someone else; media reports wrong?

More campaign shenanigans? Was Rev. Wright simply quoting Ambassador Edward Peck when he made those controversial remarks that ended with, “God damn America”? Over at the Daily Kos, naijaman seems to think so. He posted the following YouTube link showing approximately ten minutes of the sermon, rather than the short clip being run by the mainstream media. Judge for yourself: Assuming this clip shows the way it really happened, why didn’t the Obama camp say so right away? Why didn’t they release []

McCain gaffe, Lieberman correction are cause for concern

By now everyone knows that in Jordan yesterday, Sen. John McCain said Iran (predominately Shiite) was training Al Qaida (mostly Sunni) operatives to go into Iraq to fight. In fact, the Sunni and Shia are fighting each other in Iraq, and Iran is reportedly training Shiite extremists, not Al Qaida. However, not until Joe Lieberman whispered a correction in his ear did McCain change his statement. The exchange in Jordan has been reported in various ways. The Huffington Post, for example, said []

Hillary doesn’t cry… again

Crocodile tears. Or not. Depends on who you ask. But again today, again on the eve of an important primary election day, Hillary got misty-eyed. Or not. Was she remembering her show of emotion on the eve of the New Hampshire primary? When all the women voters turned out in sympathy and unexpectedly gave her the win? Or so the analysts said. If you want to listen to them. Don’t forget, they’re the same people who predicted 24 hours earlier that Obama []

This is the moment; Obama is the one

Barack Obama has won the Democratic caucuses in Iowa. And as he put it this evening in a stirring speech to his supporters, this is the moment. This is the time America will remember as the beginning of a new era, the end of the politics of fear, the beginning of the politics of hope. Partisanship, special interests, and polarization in Washington. The good ol’ boys. The smoke-filled rooms. The lobbyists. The political dynasties. This is the year it ends. It feels []
