Those interested in gray wolves in the western U.S. will enjoy a new program on National Geographic’s Wild channel. The Expedition Wild episode “Inside the Wolf Pack” offers a look at Yellowstone’s wolves, how they were reintroduced to the park, and how they are faring today.
One interesting segment explains how the wolves are helping to restore the ecology of the park by reducing the coyote population that had nearly wiped out the pronghorn. Another shows how the wolves have helped to restore vegetation, fish, and beaver to the park’s waterways.
While there is no discussion of the ongoing controversy with hunters and outfitters in Idaho and Montana, there is a sympathetic interview with a Montana sheep rancher who has suffered particularly heavy losses to the wolves. The viewer is left to ponder for himself the problem of predators and livestock.
I saw it, and It was brilliantly done. I was amazed at the insights into ecological balance!
Endless cycles and interactions, causes and effects. Nature always fascinates me. Glad you also saw and enjoyed it.
