Once again I’m among the last to know. But last night on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert I saw Ellie the Elephant for the first time. And I’m smitten. She’s great! First time I’ve ever given a second thought to a team mascot, but she’s outstanding.

Ellie (as in Ellis Island) is the mascot for the WNBA’s champion New York Liberty. I follow various sports intermittently, but basketball is really low on my list. Women’s basketball doesn’t even make the list. Oh, I peeked maybe once to see who or what Caitlin somebody is, but that was all.
Then last night … Ellie! Unlike any team mascot I’ve ever seen and decidedly in a class of her own. So much personality. Such moves. And decidedly female. It seems to me that many mascots are just androgynous blobs. But then, I’ve rarely noticed mascots.
Until now.

definitely
…this one’s my favourite, it’s ‘Gritty’, from the Philadelphia Flyers (NHL):
I see Gritty occasionally on the local sports reports. Mascot of the Year is an impressive title. I wonder if that’s among all mascots, or only pro teams, or sorted by sport …
