My, my, how convenient. What fortuitous timing. A major Internet file-sharing site based in Hong Kong, Megaupload.com, was shut down yesterday, just a day after America’s anti-SOPA/PIPA blackout. New Zealand authorities arrested the site’s founder, Kim Dotcom, a dual citizen of Finland and Germany living in New Zealand, for violation of U.S. copyright laws.
If that sounds circuitous and far-fetched, that’s because it is. But some of the allegedly pirated content was hosted on servers in Virginia, and that was enough for U.S. prosecutors to act. Mind you, this was done under existing U.S. law.
And yet America’s entertainment industry and many others* insist they need still more power; they still need SOPA/PIPA.
Frightening, isn’t it?

Is her name really DotCom??? I missed that. And yes, quite infuriating to say the least. Just goes to show they had/have other intentions with the SOPA/PIPA bills.
Okay, I see Kim is a “he”… should have known that since he’s from Hong Kong. And yes, read he legally changed his name, which is what I figured.
Then we should easily be able to have SOPA/PIPA thrown out as it appears as though they are not needed… right???

Yep, this arrest demonstrates the U.S. already has ample laws in place to deal with “evildoers” across the globe — which is what I’ve contended all along.
P.S. Just corrected the post. Dotcom isn’t Dutch. He has dual citizenship in Finland and Germany. The geography in this story is hard to keep up with.

I can not express how much anger I have about how much power our government wants over us.
This story continues to infuriate me, too. How anyone could consider passing still more copyright laws when they can already do this is just beyond me.
It’s just power. They want to make sure they have the power no matter what. I’m with you, they can already do it why rub it in our faces?
