By now you know that yesterday American Gabrielle “Gabby” Douglas won the women’s individual all-around in gymnastics. In my book the petite 4’11” gymnast is the darling of our entire 2012 Olympic team. I’ll admit gymnastics is one of my favorite sports to watch, but so be it. One flash of that smile of hers, one glimpse of her happy, upbeat attitude during the tryouts, and I was hooked. Her grace, poise, and athleticism are even more apparent in still shots. And by the way, her team nickname “the flying squirrel” is a disservice; she twists and soars like a bird.
Way to go, Gabby!
She has earned the admiration of the international stage, PT! What a girl!

The young black people in our country got a boost in role models when Barack and Michelle moved into the White House, but of course that’s not nearly enough. Gabby makes a terrific addition, and not just for them but for all Americans.
