
Blossom, a baby gerenuk, was born at the Denver Zoo on March 6. Gerenuks are listed as “near threatened” because they are so widely hunted for their skins. Blossom is the result of a carefully planned breeding program and is the first gerenuk born at the Denver Zoo.
Gerenuks are small antelope native to semiarid regions of eastern Africa. Their name means “giraffe-necked” in Somali. Adults are about 3.5 feet tall and weight from 60 to 100 pounds. They routinely stand on their hind legs to browse from tree limbs up to 6 feet above the ground.
