Well, my laptop seems to have had a stroke last night while I was watching TV. I closed it for a few hours and when I opened it the screen had gone black. Fan still running, still warm, light on the front still on, but a solid black screen. I’m on the big box now, in the back room, and don’t enjoy spending much time back here. Will talk to the son about it and probably take it out to the Apple hospital later. Cross your fingers. A new laptop is not in my budget!
Ah. It’s Apple. I was about to ask you what your OS was. That happened with my last laptop with Vista, and I had to rebuild it. That will teach me to be an early adopter, boy howdy.
And it’s my first Apple, a MacBook Pro, so I’m at a loss. It’s 4 or 5 years old now, and I’m the third owner (after 2 developers). Some component probably died from overwork, since it ran almost constantly.
Um, my iMac desktop is 4.5 years old now, one owner and purring along nicely. Knock on wood! Laptops make me nervous because my mind harkens back to the old days when hard drives were fragile. I can hardly hear mine. And for all I know, your MacBook may have a solid-state flash drive. ? However, you present one more piece of evidence for desktops IMO.
Hope your problem turns out to be small, PT.
My desktop is Windows based and I hardly know my way around on it anymore! The laptop has never been off the tray table next to the couch, so rough handling is not an issue. (My son owned it before me, and a friend of his before that. Both take very good care of their computers because that’s their livelihood.) As for what’s inside it, I’m pretty ignorant.
Hope the computer elves poke around and fix it!
4 or 5 years old and you’re the 3rd owner? That’s not looking very positive. Hopefully it is something simple, but I am just not familiar with the costs on Macs. Of course it all depends upon what it wrong with it, but if the cost to repair is in the same range as a new Windows laptop, that’s some thinking to do. Mac is great, wish I could afford them. But a new system will go a lot further. Although with my desktop now, I wanted to build my own and just can’t do that with a Mac. I almost went Linux but I need/wanted to use Adobe products.
Anyway, I’m rambling. Hope it gets well soon and is within your “repair” range.
