Supposedly Alabama’s restrictive new abortion law is intended to get the abortion issue before the now more conservative Supreme Court in an effort to overturn Roe v. Wade. But unless and until that happens, it’s an incredibly cruel, regressive law to impose on the state’s pregnant women and their doctors.
Stay pregnant or leave the state were the only options in Oklahoma when I was growing up way back in the 1950s. But with a simple stroke of her pen, Alabama’s governor has wiped out the intervening 70 years of enlightenment and progress.
It’s vicious and self-serving to criminalize women’s rights and health care. Gov. Kay Ivey (R) and the Alabama legislature should be hiding their faces in shame, not proudly posing for pictures. Their utter indifference to the health and well-being of the women in their state is appalling.

to me the worst part is their hypocrisy. A local state representative in Pennsylvania was virulently anti-abortion. That is, until his mistress turned up pregnant, at which point he advised her by email that she would need to have an abortion. Ultimately, she learned she was not pregnant, but she decided to make his emails public anyway. He left before his term was up and has not been heard of since. If only they could all be exposed…
Oh, that’s hilarious. Yeah, it’s easy to make laws affecting the other guy. It’s a lot different when it’s your own life/reputation/future at stake. And bravo to the mistress for speaking up.

Many Americans think we are going backward. Trump is dismantling and/or ignoring much of our forward progress in recent years. And with his conservative Supreme Court, the anti-choice radical right has been emboldened. (They aren’t pro-life; they’re anti-choice.) They’ve been trying for almost 50 years to overturn Roe v. Wade and believe now may be their best chance.
Instead of giving this to the Supremes they should give it to the people as we do here, Hold a referendum. and it works because we have compulsory voting
It should be the choice of the majority of the country’s citizens not the opinion of 5 or 6 people sitting in there safe secure cells.away from real life. Let the people decide.
There are a lot of hurdles before it gets to the Supreme Court. And it’s so extreme, it’s possible even a conservative court will choke on it.
States do have the right to make their own laws, as long as they are constitutional. It wouldn’t be fair to let everyone in the country vote on what Alabama’s laws should be. That’s what our court system is for.
The Constitution can be amended — but it’s a long, complicated process.
I do think the Supreme Court justices should have term limits, however. Nobody is so infallible and impartial as to deserve a position “for life.”
Every American should have the same rights and to hell with the States rights. The people must come first
States’ rights are fundamental to the American form of government. I know that may sound strange to an Aussie … just as your compulsory voting sounds strange to me.

Alabama is certainly trying. You’d think the Bible Belt would understand “do unto others …” but they still keep butting into the private affairs of others.
