Wrenching

Monday there was a shooting on the University of North Carolina campus. Associate professor Zijie Yan was killed. The shooter, a graduate student at UNC, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder.

Mainstream media, as usual, covered the story with ample video images. The next day, students at the campus newspaper, The Daily Tar Heel, took a different tack. They gathered text messages sent during the shooting and published them yesterday as the paper’s cover.

Kudos to Emmy Martin, the new editor-in-chief of the paper, and her staff.

They showed that great, effective American journalism still exists.

  1. You guys have to live with this going on every week, somewhere .. I don’t know how you all stay sane. But yes, I agree with your opinion: “great, effective American journalism still exists”.

    1. It makes me so angry, so sad, so frustrated … and there’s nothing I can do except rage silently. Can no one find a way to stop this insanity?

... and that's my two cents
