Monday there was a shooting on the University of North Carolina campus. Associate professor Zijie Yan was killed. The shooter, a graduate student at UNC, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder.
Mainstream media, as usual, covered the story with ample video images. The next day, students at the campus newspaper, The Daily Tar Heel, took a different tack. They gathered text messages sent during the shooting and published them yesterday as the paper’s cover.
Kudos to Emmy Martin, the new editor-in-chief of the paper, and her staff.
They showed that great, effective American journalism still exists.
You guys have to live with this going on every week, somewhere .. I don’t know how you all stay sane. But yes, I agree with your opinion: “great, effective American journalism still exists”.
Sane? Who said we’re sane? Do we look sane? Are we acting sane?
There is that .. but yeah, some of you are. Sort of. :\
One horror after another
It makes me so angry, so sad, so frustrated … and there’s nothing I can do except rage silently. Can no one find a way to stop this insanity?
The text messages are so powerful. Maybe the next generation will succeed in getting rid of guns.
I hope so. We’re leaving them one hell of a mess. And guns are only part of it.
