Scanning the webcams this morning, I clicked on the view at Horsetooth Reservoir, west of Fort Collins. My immediate impression was that the camera had been repositioned. Or something. It certainly wasn’t the view I’d been seeing for a number of months.
But of course it wasn’t. My last screenshot of Horsetooth was from some time last fall. What I saw this morning was radically different. The camera hasn’t been moved. But the spring snowmelt has filled the reservoir and revived the vegetation. The difference is striking.

Water is the lifeblood of the American West. And the good news this year is that there is still ample snow visible up on the Continental Divide, much of which will be coming our way as it melts.
Have a great day, everybody.

That is good news, but the news is not all good. Out of curiosity I looked up how Lake Mead (behind Hoover dam) is doing, what with all the rain in the West. It’s better, but not that much.

The Colorado River feeds Lake Mead, and the river originates in Colorado on the west side of the Divide. Much of the snowmelt over there will be heading to Lake Mead. It won’t make up for years of drought but it should help some. I just wish the moisture we’re getting right here in Thornton wasn’t coming in the form of hail.
I am so happy to see this
great news
Yep. Encouraging to say the least.
Everything’s up and down. Not a whole big lot is what we expect. The thing is to take the good with joy and accept the bad with a shrug, I guess …
Lovely comparison, Colorado.
Mother Nature gets all the credit. But it was good to see a full reservoir on a 93°F (34°C) day as we head into summer.
