Yep, they’re back. Or at least the idea is back. Monoliths, that is. I loved the monoliths of 2020. Now, in 2024, another monolith has appeared. It was found over the weekend near the Gass Peak trail in the Desert National Wildlife Refuge north of Las Vegas. This one is particularly beautiful, I think. I wonder if the creators come out every night to polish it?

Totally wonderful, Colorado !
I love that someone has gone to a lot of trouble to make something GREAT for everyone who sees it, but doesn’t seek to have his/herself known !
Me too. I wonder if the people who built and installed this one are possibly the same people who did some of the earlier monoliths?
I do hope that as with the earlier ones, someone plans to remove this before too many visitors start coming in and ruining the surroundings.
I’m very much in favor of this kind of public, anonymous art installation. I didn’t used to be when I was young and thought nothing in nature should be disturbed because it was a form of vandalism and outright desecration. I have my limits, though. It does have to be artistic, and I still despise “tourons” (tourist morons) who leave their crude marks on the natural landscape incising their identities in rocks and trees and the like. Check out @touronsofnationalparks on Instagram.
“Tourons” indeed. I’ve always despised them. But when someone does something beautiful, legal, and completely removable … what’s not to enjoy? I feel confident that whoever installed this monolith will also remove it before its very attraction becomes destructive to the environment.
yay! and fascinating
Isn’t it? The mirror finish on this one is just gorgeous. I can’t imagine it lasting very long — the finish or the monolith itself.
I wonder about the base of it and how deep it goes. The terrain is obviously hard to dig into, so whoever did it has invested a lot of effort that left no evidence of installation. Makes me think of Banksy, the street artist.
It’s not unlike the very clean installation of the 2020 monoliths. One has to admire the workmanship and effort involved. i don’t recall ever reading details of how these things are installed. But the mystery is part of the magic.
I thought I saw a spaceship flying past my house last night. This explains it.
Yep, it certainly does. They probably just hover over the site, use a giant injector to shoot the monolith into the ground, and soar away without leaving a trace. Don’t know why I didn’t think of that.
Although I think it’s beautiful In a Picasso-like way I’m more interested I think In Construction And implementation Of Modernallyths. I hope when the time comes to remove them, they document the process
The original video from my post “Humans removed …” disappeared but I found this video on YouTube just now, which contains bits of it. Some of the footage might interest you. Shots of the monolith’s interior, etc. In a different video, a guy determines that it is non-magnetic, hollow, and consists of three panels riveted together. If only someone would post a video showing how the damned things are installed.
