Well, that didn’t last long. Colorado’s monolith, which appeared June 23, is officially gone as of this morning.
Not surprisingly, landowner Lori Graves, owner of Morning Fresh Dairy Farm and the Howling Cow Cafe in Bellvue, got tired of being overrun with hundreds of sightseers and had the attraction removed.
Too bad she had to pay to remove something installed by a … trespasser. She’s keeping the monolith in case the creator wants to claim it.
Graves posted several pictures of the removal on Facebook, in addition to an official statement:
We took “the Monolith” down and are keeping it safe. If you are the creator and would like it back, please email HowlingCowCafe@gmail.com
Frankly, I think whoever put the thing up should compensate Graves — anonymously, most likely — for the removal expenses, in addition to any damage to her property caused by sightseers.

Of course I’d hoped it was the same size as THE monolith … 🙁
That really would have been something. Of course, then the crowds would have been much worse. People, or aliens, who erect these things should at least stay off of private property.
. . . and this is why we can’t have nice things!
LOL! That’s an exact quote from my mom!
(You made my day with this remark. I’m still laughing!)
They poured concrete! That’s a lot of trouble for a stunt. Some people have too much time and money on their hands.
The whole “mysterious monolith” thing had been fun until now. Mysterious arrival, mysterious, or at least unseen, removal. But whoever put this one up made a mess doing it, did it on private land, and created a worse mess by attracting hundreds of people who littered, trampled, disturbed, etc.
While it’s fun to have these things popup here and there, we all forget there is a cost to these. As my father would say, “It’s all fun and games until you get the bill.”
I hope someone, the police if necessary, makes sure the responsible person(s) get the bill.
It would have been more wonderful if people hadn’t been able to locate it.
Being at a distance, I never thought about the sightseers – people don’t think about how destruction stomping around is to the environment…and that “Private Property” means that: Keep out and keep off. So few manners and thinking these days. Few can enjoy at a distance – as the National Parks are finding out ( do you really need that selfie?)
A clever performance, but it ended up costing – and those who did it really should reimburse – even if anonymously – as one commenter said “You had your fun, and now…”
(Been AWOL recently – no problem from storms, but minor remodeling, Oy vey.
I keep resubscribing/saving to your blog which doesn’t seem to “take”- blog looks great by the way. WP enjoys messing with us?)
WP has just about messed me in to a “cannot post at all” state. It’s become so complicated!
Good to know the storms didn’t knock you out. I’ve been really worried.
I’ll try to find the email subscriber list and make sure you’re on it.
You were on the list dating back to 2012! Added you again in case WP thought that was out of date. Now you’ll probably start getting duplicates!
