There are some excellent commercials being aired during the Olympics, and this is my favorite so far. But it’s hard to go wrong when”Chariots of Fire” is playing.
I’ve been enjoying the Olympics. Always have. I can almost always find a sport I want to watch. But I was disappointed yesterday to not be able to find the dressage event. The channel supposedly carrying it was airing field hockey instead. And more than once I found I was watching something that happened several years ago. Guess they felt they had to fill the time with something until this year’s events got going.
The opening ceremony went on waaay too long for my tastes, although it certainly had its moments — the light show at the Eiffel Tower and Celine Dion’s appearance, for example. And the mechanical horse running on the river was intriguing … for the first ten minutes or so.
I was disappointed for the flag bearers. That’s supposed to be a big honor, but they were lost in the crowds on their respective boats. The lighting of the cauldron was also a big disappointment, despite its interesting “flame” of electricity and water.
Nevertheless, the sports events themselves have been entertaining, and after all, isn’t that the point?

I watched the women’s beach volleyball, one of my favorites. I thought the uniforms were excellent. Was surprised to see that both teams were made up of one tall and one short. Remember Mutt and Jeff?
I missed the beginning of the women ‘s beach volleyball where they might have said something about the uniforms. Was surprised by the tights versus the bikinis of the past. But then I checked and the temperature in Paris at the time was 50 something. Didn’t notice the one tall and one short, but I can see how that might be advantageous.
Google says this about short/tall: “The players realized that with fewer players on the court, a taller player’s height advantage could be neutralized by a shorter player’s speed and ball control. The popularity of the two-man game spread to other nearby beach clubs and eventually to the public courts.”
Well that makes sense. I just didn’t watch long enough to notice that.
Just tuned into the US-Czechoslovakia match and the height difference is sure obvious with the US gals.
so cute
I love the little girl making the team but the little boy at the end scoring the soccer goal might have been the cutest. We watch a lot of soccer in my family.
I agree that the opening ceremony went on too long. It seems it missed the point of the Olympics–the athletes coming together..
Maybe the closing ceremony will be different. But I think one announcer said they had deliberately moved the Parade of Nations to the opening ceremony. Sad if what we saw is all they get. I’ll miss seeing all the athletes gathered on the same field, talking and celebrating and having fun.
I don’t think they have a single venue large enough for all the athletes to get together, do they?
I thought the stadium where they play soccer would be big enough, but as it turns out, it’s in Nice.
Aha, the Stade de France is in north Paris and seats 88,000 (?). It was built to host soccer’s World Cup. I’d call that good enough for the Olympics.
It’s wonderful to have a reason to celebrate and be glad. Human beings are awesome, and we get to see so much awesomness in any Olympics! Lovely post PT, and what a gorgeous commercial at the beginning. You made the Team 🙂
Aww, thanks, Kate. So good to see you again!
