Today is Earth Day; do something for yourself

Today is Earth Day, and you don’t have to run barefoot in the park to appreciate it. It takes only a second to realize that without the earth beneath your feet, literally, you wouldn’t be here. And unless you have a plan to teleport yourself to another habitable planet, you might want to consider taking better care of this one.

You don’t have to believe that humans have contributed to global warming; it’s perfectly logical to believe that Earth’s climate goes through cyclical changes. But just look around you. That dirty cloud hanging over your city is not a natural phenomenon. It’s there because of your car, your power plant, the machines building your skyscrapers. Nature didn’t create that growing mound of trash at the land fill. Nature didn’t take so much water from the Colorado River that it no longer reaches the sea.

Come on, today’s the day to be selfish and self-centered. Seriously. You don’t have to be magnanimous and altruistic. You don’t have to be an environmental activist, worrying about your neighbors or nations on the other side of the globe. Do something just for yourself today to help ensure you will always have the fresh air, clean water, and good food you enjoy today.

(Now, imagine everyone acting this way … )

  1. True. Very well stated, I never heard this approach before but it makes perfect sense!

I was sort of preaching to myself and this is what came out. If it motivates even one person (me!), it was worth writing. 🙂

  2. I actually did something on Earth Day. But is it too little too late? 🙂

It better not be. I have two grandkids who need a decent world to grow up in.

... and that's my two cents
