Elk on Niwot Ridge

  1. Hi PT– That’s the best reality show footage, yet– and not scripted; wonder how Nielsen would rate it? I call the big bulls “the boys’ club” as they stay together in big-bull packs once the rut ends till it begins again. The younger bulls, button to spike to a few points, contine to stay with the herd of cows and calves till they decide they are ready to join the club. (sorry for the scientific details) As we have both seen in RMNP, the big boys tend to stay on the high tundra during green season, and the cows may spend the day up high, but move down to treeline or below for the night. My guess is for the added protection for the calves. How neat to get to watch such a large herd on Niwot! btw- do you ever see Bighorn or Goats on this cam? They are so numerous on Mt Evans, just curious. Thanks for posting the pix 🙂

    1. I read somewhere that goats and bighorn might be seen here, but I’ve never seen them. The only goats I’ve seen were on Mt. Evans, the only sheep were at and above Sheep Lake in Horseshoe Park, RMNP. Those bighorn rams are magnificent!!

      1. Hard for something that big to be quiet? They even munch pretty loud….well, hard to hear over the tourists right now perhaps. Wouldn’t mind being there anyway. Sigh. (It’s a cool front here! Below 90!….for a few minutes…sigh)

  2. Good morning! Watch for the bulls to start coming around. An Estes post yesterday showed several of the big boys with the velvet scraped off their antlers… so bugling isn’t too far away. We won’t mention that “s” word that sorta accompanies the rut in your neck of the tundra 😁
