This is the Eldora Ski area near Nederland, Colorado, this morning at 8:30 am. It’s a balmy 9°F up there, compared to -9°F here in Thornton. Wind chill warnings across the state go as low as -35°F. (That’s in addition to the avalanche warnings in the mountains.) We got maybe two inches of snow last night, compared to possibly feet in some mountain locations. And all of this is supposed to last until Tuesday.
Skiers gotta ski, I suppose. Me, I’m home with the thermostat cranked up, the faucets dripping, plenty of groceries in the fridge, a warm blanket and cat in my lap, and a dog that thinks he wants to go out until I open the door.
Other than the dangerously low temperatures, it’s just an average winter day here.

Woohoo! It’s warmed up to -6°F while I’ve been typing!

And here I am, noting local press articles about the awfulness of current humidity levels. Don’t know I’m alive, do I ?! [grin]
My biggest adjustment the first year I lived here was the dry air. It makes even Oklahoma seem humid.
Jesus. Wish I could have dry air.

I see the sun out and think it must have warmed up but here it’s still 5 degrees (at least above zero).
I’ve got sun, too. My deck thermometer says 5°, but computer/Thornton says 0°. Brrr!
Some people are really weird, let’s face it. So be it, it makes interesting watching; I’m with you. CBS Sunday Moring, a show that’s part of my Sunday routine, had a story about “cliff divers” this morning. In Italy, men and women were diving 90 and 60 feet respectively into the ocean and talking about how exhilarating it was! Same thing. I think I’ll have another cup of coffee in my cozy, warm, safe house now. (It’s -1 degrees outside.)
Coincidentally, it’s -1 here too. It was -6 when I went to bed last night. I watch all those Sunday morning news/talk shows too, or as many as I can given the conflicting schedules. My freshman year in Boulder I took a ski class and when we came back in one day I heard the wind chill had been -13. I’d not really noticed the cold at the time, but it was hours before I got completely warm again. So I sort of get it. Properly dressed and very active, you don’t notice the cold till you stop. (But I never learned to ski well enough to call it “fun.”)
Thought about you last night — was watching the old “Up Periscope” with James Garner and marveling at how the technology has changed.
It was so cold that gallon jugs in my garage froze solid. I’m so glad that it has finally warmed up. I watched a knitting podcast set in Canada during out huge cold snap and they were saying how warm it was… yep.
I have to keep reminding myself of that whenever I think of moving to Canada if Trump gets re-elected. Perhaps I should consider Australia instead, where MR can show me the ropes.
Nothing around my house froze, but my next water bill could be ugly, with all the faucets I had dripping.
