If you go up to the woods today, you’re sure of a big surprise. You might not see a bear. Yet.
Every summer Alaskan brown bears come to Brooks Falls in Katmai National Park, Alaska. And there are live streaming webcams watching them fish, swim, play, and occasionally tussle over some tasty salmon.
In the last week or so, an occasional bear has appeared on the far bank and someone operating the camera has zoomed in on them. (The cameras are operated remotely by a team of volunteers.) I’ve seen two bears but wasn’t fast enough to get screenshots. If no bear is present, you can just enjoy the scene and the relaxing sound of the falls. If the falls are too loud for you, move to the riffles cam a bit farther downstream.
Correction! I just caught this guy:

Not his best side, but I’ll take what I can get … proof that I saw a bear.
Don’t lose the link because, as in years past, there will soon be bears and salmon aplenty. (There’s also a live underwater salmon cam.) And yes, gulls are arriving too, eager to grab all the scraps the bears leave.
I kid you not. Here’s a screenshot from last year:

My bad. I’ve only mentioned the bears “a few” times in the past.

Well I got one full-frame, perched on rocks in the middle of the cascading waters ! He looked damned hungry, and there was no sign of those weirdly-distorted ageing salmon.
But I feel confident that s/he WILL get a meal.
🙂
The salmon come in such numbers that about all the bears have to do is sit with their mouths open. It’s quite a spectacle once all the players arrive. (And the salmon will be heading upstream to spawn, so will still be very fit. After all, they still have to jump up those falls.)
NICE. Thanks for sharing.
My pleasure, every time.
wonderful
If you didn’t see a bear today, check back in a week or two.
At the moment I don’t see a bear but there are lots of salmon jumping up the falls.
