Kennedy tributes supportive, or premature and tasteless?

Sen. Ted KennedyIt was announced earlier today that the seizure suffered by Sen. Ted Kennedy (D-MA) on Saturday was caused by a brain tumor. The tumor is a rapidly developing type of cancer, malignant glioma, with a particularly bleak prognosis.

The nation’s thoughts and prayers are with Sen. Kennedy and his family, and it is understandable that so many people would drop everything to offer support and encouragement. But under the circumstances, isn’t it somewhat inappropriate and premature for the major news outlets to be eulogizing the man as though he were already dead, to the exclusion of everything else?

Reports are that Kennedy is alert, walking around, participating actively in the decision-making about his treatment, and conversing with friends and family. Will they see all the attention as welcome support, or as some kind of macabre public death watch?

  1. That’s disgusting and tasteless if you ask me. You were asking me, right?

My heart does go out to him and his family…..

Yep, I was asking. Glad to know I’m not the only one who thinks so. I was just stunned that so many people were carrying on like he was dead already.

  2. The guy is approaching 80 years old and still looks very alert (despite the tumor). People, at this age, tend to have a lot of health issues. The press is making a big deal out of nothing.

I couldn’t agree more. The press is carrying on like a hoard of paparazzi, complete with helicopters hovering over the man’s home.
