Approximately twenty-four hours from now it will all be over. The 2012 presidential campaign and election will mercifully, finally be over. All but the counting. And possibly the shouting and the recounts and the late counts and the accusations and the challenges and the lawsuits and, god forbid, the Supreme Court ruling.
The only thing worse than this endless campaign … could be the end of this endless campaign. It will be bad enough if my candidate doesn’t win. But as close and as bitter as this race has been, I very much fear an aftermath like the 2000 election. Only this time it will be worse because the attacks from both sides have been so vicious and so venomous.
Even when we get through the voting and the counting, and a winner is declared … then what? Can and will a nation — and a Congress — that has been so deeply divided for so long by such rancor just forget it all and start pulling together again? Or have we poisoned our well once too often?
