This commercial is driving me a little nuts. Here in Denver I see it several times a day. Please watch it (only 30 seconds) and then continue reading.
Did you notice anything amiss?
Okay, maybe it’s just me. But I’d swear that in the middle of the commercial (:12), the woman is not saying “Chevron.” She’s dropping the r and saying “Chevon.”
No? Then I’ve developed a weird hearing problem. I’m now focusing too much on the one detail. Overthinking or overlistening or something. A negative earworm. Wish I could go back and hear it for the first time.
I can’t imagine Chevron would air this commercial if their name is really being mispronounced.
Still …

She IS using the ‘r’ – but it’s … erhmmm … elided – glossed over.
Nuthin’ wrong with you, Colorado – nuthin’ extra, anyway. [grin]
Well in a way I did hear it again for the first time. I just played it on my phone for the first time. And I might almost maybe have heard the r. Or just imagined it because I knew it was supposed to be there.
I didn’t hear an ‘r’.
Aha! I’m not crazy!
I hear the “r” but it isn’t prominent.
Maybe it’s my Okie-trained ear. I sorta maybe heard it on my phone, so maybe it depends a bit on the speaker being used.
I’m not su e what the issue is. Then again, my hea ing isn’t what it used to be.
Anyway, I don’t hea this ” ” you’ e talking about, but I can’t see that the e’s anything w ong with that.
😆
you are right! it was ‘chevvon’
I was beginning to think watching “Succession” a few months ago had affected my hearing (character with Irish name Siobhan).
I know my hearing isn’t the best but I watched it few times and each time was the same
I’ve been vindicated!
or, we both are really hard of hearing )
I’m already getting “hard of seeing.” I refuse to also be hard of hearing.
I first heard a faint /r/ but in retrospect my mind may simply have made closure hearing what it expected to hear which does occur. After reading the rest of your writing, I listened for several trials as this retired Speech-Language Professional I am and repeatedly heard
“Chev… with the /v/ slightly extended to “…von”.
The word of a pro. I’m good with that. Thanks. Suddenly this is reminding me of that dress thing a few years ago — do you see a white dress or a blue dress? or whatever it was. I’m intrigued now that all these readers are hearing (or not hearing) different things.
