I was looking for something else this morning when I came across this video from British Columbia. What a beautiful way to start the day.
(This video runs 6 minutes. If you prefer, there’s a shorter version below.)
I’m amazed that the mother moose didn’t attack these men. An adult moose averages 6 feet at the shoulder and is perfectly capable of injuring or killing a human. But likely she was as frightened and confused as her calves.
As one commenter noted, this is a perfect example of why we need wildlife crossovers on our highways. There are more than 70 such crossings in Colorado, with more being planned, and they have greatly reduced the number of wildlife-vehicle collisions.
There are are no winners when a moose, elk, or other large animal strays onto a highway in front of a vehicle moving at 80 mph.

An edited, annotated version of the original:

Excruciating, it was, Colorado … but happy ending.
That’s why we need more crossovers. Colorado is doing a good job with them. Here’s an example and explanation of the thought and planning that goes into them.
I’m crying.
I was too.
