Oklahoma women yesterday marched on the state capitol to protest a Senate bill that would grant a fetus full ‘personhood’ at the moment of conception.
The bill sailed through the state Senate a few weeks ago and reportedly is expected to pass in the Republican-controlled House as well. Governor Mary Fallin (R), who has signed other anti-abortion bills, is expected to sign the “Personhood Act” if it gets to her desk.
One of the signs brought to the protest by University of Oklahoma students said, If I wanted the government in my womb, I’d fuck a senator. State Senator Judy Eason McIntyre (D) couldn’t resist and borrowed the sign for a photo op. She told the Huffington Post, “I saw a sea of signs that caught my eye, but this one in particular — I loved its offensive language, because it’s just as offensive for Republicans of Oklahoma to do what they’re doing as it relates to women’s bodies. I don’t apologize for it.”
The bill’s author, Sen. Brian Crain, was not amused. “A sign like that diminishes the importance and the seriousness of the issue and it’s regrettable. You look at Senate Bill 1433 and it says life begins at conception and that the unborn have rights.” But it’s okay for you, Senator, to diminish the importance of women’s reproductive rights?
Dan Skerbitz, Director of Personhood Oklahoma, was shocked:
The personhood issue often provokes strong language from all sides. But this display of vulgarity from a sitting Senator is truly shocking. It is more evidence of the hardness of heart behind a movement that would deny the right of a helpless pre-born baby to be recognized and protected by the law as a human person.
This makes it obvious that their moral compass is broken. It is not surprising that a worldview that finds such comments acceptable is not above lying about the Personhood Amendment or its possible effects on the lives of Oklahomans. Those who oppose the concept of personhood in Oklahoma are showing their true colors.
Skerbitz knows all about “hardness of heart.” It’s what he and his organization have for America’s women. As for “lying about the Personhood Amendment” … (a) It’s an act, not an amendment, and (b) people can read it for themselves and decide what it does and doesn’t say.
It’s stunning that people like Crain and Skerbitz could work for years to restrict or rescind women’s reproductive rights — rights that have been the law of the land since 1973 — and yet profess shock that women have become so angry, so outraged that they’d finally resort to verbal obscenities. What about the obscenity of bombing women’s health care clinics, the obscenity of murdering women’s doctors, or the obscenity of trying to legalize the rape of women with ultrasound wands?
Here’s to you, Sen. McIntyre! Women need more representatives like you.

GREAT sign!!!!
Yeah, I couldn’t not publish it.
Reblogged this on Motley News and commented:
I really wanted to share this photo as this sign is great! So perfect and expresses the sentiment of so many women over the Personhood bill. Check out the post for more details.
I had a hunch you’d like this.
Yeah… you know me too well already. 😀
You should be getting hits from FB. As it turns out, one of my blog buddies is friends with the woman in the photo who has her back to the camera.
Wow, small world!
Gee, I wonder how she really feels? 🙄 😆
She feels exactly like the rest of us really feel! And she found the perfect way to say it.
Just sadly shaking my head….this isn’t 3 steps forward and 1 back – it’s 3 steps finally, then body slam back to the kitchen and ground 0. Incredible.
I’ve heard some pundits speculate that nationwide this is all just an election year ploy. Like that’s supposed to make us feel better? These proposed laws are dangerous and regressive and will affect women’s lives far beyond this election year. People who would propose and vote for legislation like this just for political gain are beneath contempt.
I suspect the same – still seeing women as (brainless) pawns to be used at will
You tell em’ girl!!
🙂
